Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, The Congos. For the ninth volume of FRKWYS, a music and film series pairing contemporary artists with those that may have preceded them in style andor approach, Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras meet legendary dub reggae group The Congos in St. Catherine, Jamaica and create the full-length album, ICON GIVE THANK. In conjunction, RVNG will release ICON EYE, a feature film documenting the young musicians time spent living and learning The Congos way. In hindsight, the FRKWYS Vol. 9 timeline takes on dream-like qualities. In a matter of months, the idea for the collaboration was divinely inspired, read more. Album's nice. But which is sometimes a bit to obscured by all of the sound and muddy productions. It's like a collage of instruments and sustainned decay. Would've been nice if some structure be left. Even nature has its structure. Sometime the vocals seem to sound as a boat being on a different river only meeting the music on the crossing. Geddes Gengras, The Congos - Happy Song - ICON EYE 2:27. The product of a whirlwind 10-day recording session, Icon Give Thank is a startling mélange of fractured, murky instrumentals and gorgeous vocal harmonies, whose very existence testifies to the massive influence that The Congos masterpiece Heart of the Congos produced by Lee Perry has had on contemporary music. Though none of the selections here could properly be characterized as reggae, all of Icon Give Thank-from the woozily synth-dusted nyabinghi of Invocation to the ecstatic incantations of Happy Song-is deeply indebted to the singular aesthetic of Heart of the Congos. Icon Give Thank isnt about one artist faxing in hastily cobbled vocals to tag on to music coined in isolation by the other. Neither is this in the style of Jamie xxs superb Gil Scott-Heron remix album Were New Here, where the younger artist remoulded existing music by the veteran. echo-laden valley. The Congos deliver their declamations from the other side, with the listener stood at the bottom of the densely-foliaged valley in the middle, open-mouthed in awe as the dubwise bass line rumbles underground. Icon Give Thank is a collaboration between two very distant kinds of cosmic vibes makers, reaching out to meet one another through time and context. Inhaling deeply, we have the latter-day Los Angelean psychedelics of Cameron Sun Araw Stallones and his accomplice M Geddes. Nodding by the mixing desk, you find the older, contemplative dub reggae of the Congos. The first half of their joint endeavour is hugely stoned, with the more strident sounds of the Americans cutting across the chants and rhythms of their hosts. Vocals become more prominent on the second half, allowing tracks su. His 2012 collaboration with M. Geddes Gengras and The Congos Icon Give Thank reached number seven on the Billboard Top World Albums chart. Sun Araw and The Congos also performed live together. Araw is a Tagalog word meaning sun or day, depending on context, so Stallones' stage name literally translates to sun sun. However, as Stallones recounted to LA Weekly, he considers his name to mean sun day, which is a pun referring to Sunday, and more specifically the Christian Sabbath day. Therefore, Stallones considers his stage name to mean sacred rest&quo. Bringing producermixer M Geddes Gengras along with him to St. Catherine, Jamaica, Stallones set about a 10-day-long session of sonic exploration and mystical connection with some of the key players in the legendary Black Ark sound of the 1970s, and the results, perhaps unsurprisingly, are blissfully irie. In fact, for lovers of dub reggae and subdued psychedelic skronk, Icon Give Thank is the stuff of dreams: spaced-out, echo-y dub mantras that feel both like artifacts caked in years of fuzzy magnetic degradation and products of our contemporary moment of sludgy, electronic droning. For the ninth volume, experimental musicians Cameron Stallones, better known as Sun Araw, and Mark Geddes Gengras, who plays in Pocahaunted and LA Vampires, and a film crew went to record an album with reggae vocal legends the Congos at their headquarters in St Catherine, Jamaica. It must have been 10 days of sheer magic during which, according to the record labels website, the musicians and filmmakers ate, slept, and smoked. The Congos are a vocal group that have been around for a long time - their late-1970s Lee Perry-produced The Heart of the Congos is one of the best reggae albums of all time
