The Natural Soul finds Lou Donaldson delving deeply into soul-jazz, recording a set of funky, greasy instrumentals with only a few references to hard bop. Donaldson occasionally sounds a little awkward with the relaxed groove of The Natural Soul, as does trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, but the trio of guitarist Grant Green, organist John Patton, and drummer Ben Dixon keep things cooking. Green and Patton's solos often burn and are always invigorating, and Lou frequently matches their heights. Tommy Turrentine is blowing the trumpet who actually is Stanley Turrentine's older brother who is another Blue Note stalwart but today it is just Tommy. John Patton or Big John putting the groove down on Hammond Organ and that is what it is with lashings of Funk throughout the album. The Natural Soul Album released in 1962 from Blue Note Records is a standout in SoulJazz. Green, Patton, and Dixon were, like the Jimmy Smith Trio, one of the most prevalent organ trios of the period, offering a simpler, grittier R&B over Smith's far-flung virtuosity. Title: The Natural Soul Year Released: 2003 Record Label: Blue Note Records. About Lou Donaldson. Organist John Patton, guitarist Grant Green, and drummer Ben Dixon constituted a formidable rhythm machine for the Blue Note label in the early to mid-1960's. With the recording of THE NATURAL SOUL recorded 9 May 1962 Lou Donaldson ends his transition from his earlier straight-ahead hard bop recordings into the soul-jazz phase of his long, illustrious career. His earlier Here Tis and Gravy Train albums served as the first two steps in the transition. Lou adds Tommy Turrentine on trumpet for this album and together they dig deep into the soul-jazz bag with only a few slight references to hard bop. The original compositions - which form the bulk of the album - aren't much more than blues and soul vamps, but they provide an excellent fo. Iron City - Grant Green, Ben Dixon, Big John Patton.
