Album 2011 3 Songs. After Handel's Vesper version for piano. By Gavin BryarsRalph van Raat. Ramble on Cortona. Piano Concerto, The Solway Canal. By Gavin Bryars. Piano - Ralph van Raat, Otto Tausk leads Cappella Amsterdam and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra Paintings by ''Fernand Khnopff 1858-1921''. The album doesn't make the kinds of demands that show off Ralph van Raat's considerable virtuosity, but he brings just the right gentle poetry to Bryars' music. Otto Tausk leads Cappella Amsterdam and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra in a colorful and expressive performance of the concerto. Naxos' sound is atmospheric, clean, and well-balanced. On the albums centerpiece, Piano Concerto The Solway Canal, van Raat is joined by Cappella Amsterdam and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic led by Otto Tausk. Interestingly, Bryars has written a piano part that does not emphasize virtuosity, and he doesnt pit soloist vs. orchestra instead, piano gently leads the ensemble and choir. Bryars: Piano Concerto The Solway Canal Ralph van Raat. Ramble on Cortona draws material from Bryars composition Laude, which in turn looks to 13th-century Italian vocal manuscripts. The slow, mysterious work evokes a Bill Evans re-imagining of Early Music. After Handel's Vesper. Ralph van Raat piano Cappella Amsterdam Netherlands Radio Chamber PhilharmonicOtto Tausk. Label: Naxos. The rippling piano part runs through the entire 28 minutes with hardly a pause, while the orchestra subtly shadows the soloist. The choir, singing words by Edwin Morgan, similarly ebbs and flows in and out of consciousness. In After Handel's Vesper and Ramble in Cortona, Ralph van Raat manages this fairly well. But he's on stronger form in the Piano Concerto, with its much wider spectrum of moods and colours the orchestral playing and choral singing, too, are decently good. In fact Ramble on Cortona is the only work Bryars has composed thus far for solo piano. Inspired by 13th century manuscripts found in Cortona, Italy, it is also in a measured pulse of lyric attraction. The Dutch pianist, Ralph van Raat, is obviously well attuned to the Bryars idiom, and finds the Netherlands orchestra in excellent form. CD 1. Gavin Bryars Composer.
