By Sir Edward Elgar. Engima Variations, Op. Caroline Alice Elgar, The Composer's Wife. Cockaigne Overture In London Town, concert overture for orchestra & organ, Op. Edward Elgar. Andrew Davis, BBC Symphony Orchestra. Allegro piacevole. Sir Edward Elgar's Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47, was composed in 1905 for performance in an all-Elgar concert by the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra. Scored for string quartet and string orchestra, Elgar composed it to show off the players' virtuosity. Though initial critical reception was lukewarm at best, the score soon came to be recognized as a masterpiece. The work, which is roughly twelve to fourteen minutes in length, is like a multi-layered symphonic poem for string. Elgar: Variations on an Original Theme, Enigma - Variation 14. Finale: . It opens with a spirited Cockaigne Overture, and ends with the Enigma Variations. My overall impression of the Enigma performance is, again of refinement, and the sound is, again, beautiful. This generously-filled disc pulls together three of Elgar's best-known orchestral works Enigma Variations, Introduction and Allegro, Serenade for Strings with his Cockaigne Overture. The performances by the BBC Symphony under Andrew Davis are first-class British orchestras seem to have a special understanding of this repertoire. Duration: Album.
